Temporary Lodgings for Emigrants, Hamburg (1882)

This woodcut by Gustav Broling depicts temporary lodgings in the port city of Hamburg. This type of housing was designed to accommodate some of the tens of thousands of emigrants who booked third-class steerage for America.
